December Meeting

The next meeting will be on December 16th at Chelsea and Alexis' house. Or as I like to say, the Ho-Stap's place.

Alexis, should anyone bring any food? I can bring something if you'd like.

Ramadan

So I called Chelsea to invite her to dinner on Sunday. Chelsea had to remind me that I already had plans, ie. book club. The start of the new school year has officially kicked my ass. Anyway, we're meeting at Shelly's this time at 7 I think. If I'm wrong please correct me.

I'm really glad we're reading this book, this year I have a few Muslim students. And it seems we've coordinated this with the start of Ramadan. Looking forward to seeing you all.

October Change

As Chelsea and I have been having a hard time finding Nemesis by Ms. Christie (the book for October), another book by her is in order. The new selection: The Mysterious Affair at Styles. Read it. Live it. Love it. Also, I'm Proud of You: My Friendship with Fred Rogers by Tim Madigan has been confirmed as the book for December. Who doesn't love Mr. Rogers? What better way to celebrate the holidays with a little cheer from our beloved besweatered childhood icon?

Meeting Today

The meeting on The Picture of Dorian Gray will be a Micky and Kristan's, today (8/19) at 7:00. Hope everyone had a chance to finish it, better yet enjoy it.

p.s. I updated the list of future books to the right. At the end of the last meeting we threw out the idea of 1) I'm Proud of You, a story about Mr. Rodgers, or 2) A Short History of Nearly Everything. Any thoughts of what you'd like to be reading in December?

Meeting Wrap Up

Thanks to everyone who made it. There was a lively conversation despite a lack of questions on my part. Mark your calendars the next meeting will be at 7:00 on the 19th of August at Micky and Kristan's. We also added two books to the queue: October - Nemesis by Agatha Christie and November - Octavian Nothing by M.T. Anderson. We also worked out some options for December, but I'll get to that later.

Sacrament

I sure hope Rachel and Chris are enjoying their camping trip and that Chris hasn't been attacked by any bears... or Rachels, for that matter.

I finished You Shall Know Our Velocity! well before the last meeting (so I could get it out of the way and get down to some serious Harry Potter business) and out of curiosity, I looked it up on Wikipedia. It didn't go too much beyond basic plot summary but the "Different editions" sub-heading is interesting. A version of the book where Hand narrates for a stretch and basically calls Will a liar? Count me in. Alas, other than ordering Sacrament (the alternate version) off of Amazon for $131.85, it doesn't seem likely I'll ever know what he said.

All Hail Alexis!

Hey Superheros! Has everyone had a chance to dig in to the new book? Looks like it's shaping up to be a good travel book. If you don't have any travel plans... Duluth makes a wonderful weekend getaway. Go Duluth!

I'll be out to state for a while. Chris and I are hitting the road at 2 AM Sunday morning (it is an old Edstrom tradition) and be back around the 19th. Alexis is getting set up to post, any other takers? Let me know ASAP so I can add you in before I leave.

Superheros Wanted!

Thank you Shelly for hosting! I could eat bean salad and corn on the cob all summer long. 9 out of 10 superheros rate it better tasting than "unwashed hands".

Also, I just wanted everyone to know that I can add you in to post. All you need is a google ID and I'll sign you in to the account. Any takers?

Googolplex

I admit I’m not too far into the book. I’m just a third of the way in. However that hasn’t stopped me from flipping ahead to steal a few glances at all of the pictures and experimental typography. I’m really enjoying all of the little surprises in the text layout. The pages from the mute’s notebook have been my favorite so far. What are your thoughts? What did you think while looking through the photos? Interesting or distracting?
