December's meeting

We had decided on Sunday, December 14th for our next meeting but there is a potential problem with this day. The Half Price Books Holiday party is that same evening. I'm not entirely sure when it will begin - 8 pm-ish would be my guess, but this will take away at least two of us (me and Chelsea) and probably three (me, Chelsea, and Shelly). If we had it earlier in the day, say around 5 or so, would that work for everyone? We can go earlier, too. If that doesn't work, we'll have to look at another day.

The Book Thief

The meeting will be on Sunday Dec. 14th. At Chelsea and Alexis' I believe. This will move back our Eleanore Roosevelt book back to January.

Book retreat food

Here's the list so far of food everyone is bringing for our book club "retreat":

Shelly - pesto for pasta
Rachel - veggie side dishes or salad
Micki - muffins or a baked good for breakfast
Anne - eggs/omelette for breakfast
Chelsea - cheese & crackers and something else that I can't remember
Kristen - will be discussing pasta/entree options with Shelly, mixers for alcohol
Alexis - snack items (chips & salsa, fruit, etc.), dessert of some sort

If anything is missing or I forgot anything, let me know!

Also, everyone has mentioned bringing alcohol of some sort. I think we're covered in that department. We will all have ample opportunity to get drunk, apparently.

I'm really excited about our retreat!

Good Reads

I've started using Good Reads, anyone else? If anyone wants to compare book shelves, my email on their site is rkoniar@gmail.com. Also, if you want to add your list of books to the side bar email me and I'll be happy to add it in.

In Praise of Slowness

The plan so far is to meet at Anne's cabin for this book's meeting. Which is perfect for this book. Slowing down, community, slow food, slow sex... wait, scratch that last one. We won't be putting that one into practice at this meeting. Alexis will be sending out that neat meeting-widget-thing again to nail down a date.

July's book

'Tis I, Alexis, with the non-fiction pick for the month of July: In Praise of Slowness: Challenging the Cult of Speed by Carl Honore.

Also, I sent out a MeetingWizard to everyone so we can figure out the date and time of our next meeting. Please indicate your availibility!

Head's Up

Hey folks, the next book club meeting is at la casa de Chelsea y Alexis on Sunday, May 4th at 7 p.m. Also, Shelly's graduation party will be the following weekend, also at our house, on Saturday, May 10th, probably around 7ish! Sigh, we're such social butterflies.

Farm Bill

Just wanted to pass this on, it's a New York Times article written by a MN farmer. Interesting in light of "The Worst Hard Time." It seems to me if we've learned anything from the Dust Bowl and the Potato Famine- it's that crop diversity is a good thing.

AWOL

Sorry about the lack of posts here. Fall semester kicked my ass. Spring should be better. I promise- because baby I've changed. It'll be different this time.
